I made two the other day and they are so cute! They can hold credit cards or cash. I even put in some change and shook it around and it stayed put. I'm not kidding when I say "little" wallet though. Might be really cute for a child or for in that "fun" purse that you use on special occasions. They don't use much fabric and you can make the interior pockets scrappy and fun. I'm sure I will make many more!Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3180802525576045944.post-44227780119791310532011-12-05T21:11:00.005-06:002011-12-05T21:22:25.919-06:00Advent CalendarI follow this GREAT blog and saw an idea that I just had to attempt to replicate.
Peanut Blossom Advent Calendar.
So I set out to:
#1 find such a calendar to "spruce up". Luck would have it that Target did have one fairly similar. So I got it.
#2 Select fun papers to do the job. Luckily I have a great resource at my church. A gal who sells "Stampin' Up" products.

So here is my product with MUCH help from Miss E. She did a great job helping me choose papers to combine and ideas to try. She became in expert gluer I must say!
They have loved opening it and finding the treasures and notes that lie within.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgEHso_2Uv73Gvyi9vXy2eSMQDstJDS24JSJuj8QdcyOspp_1cWYzo8GZOKSqVBHGIhBKAC13vMn03edWez9xA3TsQTSFWjKQNmMW9ze6QEY9kKCE6FHP-EineHnyzR93a2_r6MzVyAdCM/s320/DSC01270.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5682850156249219410" />Unknownnoreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3180802525576045944.post-74682868388871202262011-03-24T08:17:00.005-05:002011-05-17T10:59:53.620-05:00UFOs and not the flying type!UFOs in the quilting world are Un-Finished Objects. In my sewing room, PLENTY of them reside. Samples made and never finished and left over fabric scraps just waiting for inspiration to strike. Soooooo I have been working on these "piles" around my sewing room and it is keeping me plenty busy! I even went to a quilt shop with a gift certificate in hand and DID NOT buy a piece of fabric. My piles at home are just calling to me to be creative with what I have and make something fun.

My Mom also gives me her great leftovers. It is like buying NEW fabric when I get something from her stash. Pictured above is a combo using blocks she had left over from a mystery quilt that she did. I made the diagonal striped blocks that are on a foundation square. VERY easy sewing. But it will be a cute quilt when done. DONE.... that is a word that fails me lately UNLESS it is a bag I am making as a gift OR something with a deadline.

But thinking about my life, I am a UFO.... an unfinished object. We all grow and change while we are kids, but once that "physcial" growing stops, then comes much growth in other areas. This spring I would like to grow in a few ways. Grow in my physical health. Grow in my ability to have patience with my kiddos. Grow in my ability to prioritize the important stuff day to day. I have a knack for the ability to ignore the piling laundry and go sew. Not always the best choice. Striking a better balance is what I would like.

So if you have any UFOs around your sewing room OR things in the corners of your life that you would like to change... Let me challenge you to do so! It's SPRING!! Great things are possible!
Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3180802525576045944.post-72608324416677492082011-02-15T10:55:00.010-06:002011-02-15T11:18:04.849-06:00Baby Quilts Part 3<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 184px; height: 200px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgabu_iDXKFdHb4fl-C5n8MLk5P4BcDn3C1IaOlcEFlD8_sLR1wrABHAHtdZVQ2Zd1YcYRh2gyF1lIINWqg_AyruVg-pjfQdJ3zgdAvt-5wyp5MXa8WsmH9fWQqgdcFHBEQ7xN_2E0DCak/s200/pinkone.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5573962160985649842" /> <img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 154px; height: 200px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj-VaBmMv1PAwAttrbCaHwqv3SAoqD89Kjxa2HUNyNZa7hwgmRZh1XEWvOELDsyCQBFikxxwakT_a2CsLGIZ5X5dJKWXspUEMnkhaLmecC0xT1W-DzLL1_z2Dydu_RDODw35OQTqeGm6Ag/s200/bo.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5573962161097661778" /> <img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 190px; height: 200px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiFBQ1hA_Zm8AXeGHLWdp3TH4gVOdr_Rnh4pw5SO-qaSgEZ-zqsfUBE63RCLiQHJ1SCxyuQQkjwWKnfZufuXb-Qn9xchXU7R-JqJgeECakDK51HhgKz0wDEkBTHcOWq0374kSWtqjz2mEA/s200/pg.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5573962165403685506" /> <img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi23U5PbepoEs7tTsWgRI7a6MONWyC9L3slmHyaj3hwGv4NJMmK1VG1UgncRhcmRTkCeIBnrFEOpTz5amonRSeQgwJuzWApDVrJuira4yixZrYYiU5vJzRW_JZDyb8Cvkrek_2XesPc10k/s200/DSC00279.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5573966279617379746" />

I made these 4 quilts for some kiddos who live in Kansas City. Her favorite colors are lime green, orange, purple and blue. WOW that was a fun palate to play with. I used a pattern from Atikinson Designs called Lucky Stars. The great thing about this pattern is that the stars "float". So you don't have worry about your points being perfect. Great for me as I was a beginner when I made this quilt.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3180802525576045944.post-39009250003748872752011-02-15T10:48:00.002-06:002011-02-15T10:55:26.197-06:00Gala Purse<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiiAIFOEqwyXLdV8zm_CABqtZP4NpVEW5dKQf3Vb1nOfK4BptjWrkwAcV84Xe8C4i-IbtU2vK0Iwg3UFdGKsfXXn4MRw_9LNOtk1RwuNmKXwE2Lzwl8wuKmAE8KrCfMBVzUU_UPRvYl9TY/s320/DSC01181up.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5573960271827784306" />
I made a really cute purse to auction off at the Gala for my kids' school this year.
This was the first time I had made this pattern calledMargo Handbag by Lazy Girl Designs. I have made oodles and gobs of gifts. I have made many store samples, some of which have been sold. I have also made some cute little library book tote bags for a friend, which I can turn out in an hour. But THIS my friends was my 1st "purse project" for hire!! My son has a wonderful teacher and she approached me to make a purse for her Grandmother for Christmas. I was so flattered! I have made many purses and bags for the staff at our school as gifts. But to make one for pay... hmmm... this is new for me. She said her Grandma liked tan, beige, etc. pretty nuetral colors. I had a gorgeous fabric hiding in my stash that plays on these colors, but is a little more interesting. I love how it turned out and so did her Grandma, which warms my heart to no end.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgAIIN-SLon3rZ68lL_t5k3pmWxQw6ezhr2_RcfsdCj9OTSZ4lCodOHqdXXqVoRXm_X2KYMoG8hi4H38-fRsMpgUzTtwM5sj5IbxqBsAAHygRYIvKCQOeTcdaQWBApTPAOmv-oSW-eX_k0/s320/DSC00995.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5563916233426854690" />Unknownnoreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3180802525576045944.post-34993605270861152822011-01-12T22:12:00.010-06:002011-01-19T10:03:59.195-06:00Baby Quilts Part 2<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 288px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgPJ4hGwNXqo0CfcqjYWsLMzpzYAuehS4qWk3GUAynEDleHgB930DVYhL7mhHf-IMqrS5MPYDfID62wph3PbbB062sZGKLTuXvnQGfhFj7V5m6e8Ktun8xCERKVz_xVjLJjah-uiNEsFM4/s320/marins+garden+quiltsm.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5561519456153673314" />
I really enjoy making baby quilts, as I may have stated before. I get to try new patterns and be creative and they are small and easy to complete.

This quilt I made for a great friend of mine. It is such a cute pattern with the pinwheel flowers. It is called Yellow Brick Road by Atkinson Designs. I made this quilt for a good friend who lives on a farm. The fabrics have little piggies, cows, clouds and other animals. Looking back on it the colors are a little pastel for a boy. You add the triangles onto the long sashing pieces to create the star affect.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3180802525576045944.post-63866644157842485652010-11-20T19:59:00.007-06:002011-01-19T10:04:27.063-06:00Baby Quilts Part 1I realized that most of my posts this year have been about kids' clothes or bags that I have made. I guess that is what I have been sewing as well. But I got my start in the sewing world as a quilter. So I am going to share some of the MANY baby quilts I have made over the years. Baby quilts are such a wonderful way to get started quilting. They are easy to FINISH, and I don't get as bored with the design by the time I am done.

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 257px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhim4a6T98GKyGDShO420EzxAvXbkqeefe3pC8ljE4R_6M5bWWDXmoxfPNmOQ0sYunaWjg1ns4qlLh_hW9fVNP3vgvFJmdfazRBxdrvv2xlqXcA6TdpIGlIZ_ZE5PagQGhCjMU50kL3Zl4/s320/dots+small.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5541817600718210818" />

This "bubbles" quilt I made for a dear friend of mine. At my church we make quilts to donate and it is a good way to use up scraps!

So.. she gave me some AWESOME scraps of pinks and yellows from some baby quilts she made and here are the results. A quilt and a bag. (Yes.. those were SOME scraps!!) The kids' bag is going to be given to a raffle for a school event and the quilt will go to some great kiddo at Grace Place this Christmas.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiligj7CVay-SbTpcgL4oxJhW9Ww49yZ2xGaNhQvsHp3Cl5Xts-hmb8DPXyHxp8BE34Yuoeg3RdIpquUiMTYOCbB8LXVXlPdaQHFg9BPg6iZ-bM-cwsozPT7VLnblLag7vePeiPCVG0Nb0/s320/leftoverbag.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5532729509477111058" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjIN1rf0vt0VwmtqK1XA7iGUL_5RGsY-TYqk7DhJjejl3gPnPnrkvdjnX5bC1gOjZSy2ulzFSem5nk7eqMobfqeuaeDc6eQe9bzcJiAWqLZoQ_xsA_J9Ks8pvd7J25w_lwm_3so9TnUiHw/s320/leftoverquilt.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5532729498443347138" />Unknownnoreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3180802525576045944.post-46339400214884730022010-08-23T08:38:00.004-05:002011-01-19T11:53:35.729-06:00Anniversary Wall Hanging<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi0mLqv0jxCgHhKyUtJVmv40c3D1sDAGPo4jdm3vJ8Uvy2tUzYvnL6I6SO6yXjGBtyNk6-cx9moLuDqwWxfMkxqQGRTnfxNMTiZpTd9XuB3UCof3UMd0bSy2ZwPEnPSQR0Ue9dWFoJHVbQ/s320/DSC00932.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5508600253192671266" />
I was hired this summer to make a gift to celebrate a 50th Wedding anniversary. If you include my own Miss E, that make 7 granddaughters in total. Because I am a wonderful auntie... cough.. cough.. snicker... snicker I decided to make them all twirly skirts and embellished Ts. It won't be long until they day comes when it won't be so "cool" for the 2 eldest girls to wear something that matches the little ones that are 6 and 7 years younger. SO.... I got to the task of finding cute fabrics that would appeal to all the girls. I found many of them at a great shop in Stewartville, MN called All in Stitches. Needless to say I had a grand time buying fabric for this fun project!

I had a project-for-hire earlier in the summer and thus procrastinated my task a bit! Luckily a friend of mine came to visit that week and she helped me turn out the skirts and shirts!

So enjoy my "oh so cute" nieces and their matchy outfits! These fabrics are so fun and Miss E just loves them.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 146px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg7saFZWdBYYnIoU0L0EEFKaE59LJIVka3T1D2eDvfviPy7o00B9N1DFSbgud2SWmnM9R_FYkYMM_w9IXSWtD0l_MxaQuaEIpRc3qFzBk4QAcfQjsh5Iq4C8Et4l04YGnlCxwpRN2XO4sk/s320/efrontsm.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5490786353992113970" /> <img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 223px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi_tmjZkIvt18dDc9T611vMcMYwOhLlzzm9Ziojvw2xc-VviVvKVjuag1h_JHKaqgUnx8BWSQwgdmyFAMAZKPjERKYUXqfXNYzIDhvbO5OjtXi8kAz0LyS66NLgXfXX9kWU8pE3kUJ5fDQ/s320/ebacksm.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5490786341942218434" />

She had fun helping decide the layout of the fabrics! Mr. G finished up preschool this year and I made bags for his teacher and aid. He enjoyed his year and learned many great things.

For Mrs. M, I used denim, Dick & Jane, and alphabet fabric. It was a new pattern for me. The bag pattern is the Miranda Day Bag by Lazy Girl Designs. We make quilts for graduating Seniors in high school to remind them of their church family when they go off into the next part of their life. I had the great joy to make a quilt for Lynze. She is the daughter of my good friend Anne.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi_fjxerxq5DqhRppmdT_LjGC-_2sqq4cRpbn5Cjnj3g4rTAZibs-6PTzDNumJNpjLxLR7HbsLWC2LZCPX6eqm_ywVdc_nQo15ochCsOVJ7Gx7WdeNhsWGaDDre07voYwy6hA_bUyvLZ0s/s320/Lwith+quiltsm.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5473356499499729442" />

Lynze likes to draw, so her Mom scanned many of her drawings and emailed them to me. Well... what this curly Sue needed for her 4th bday was a twirly skirt. Miss D is a very girly girl! Loves shoes and all things twirly and princess-like!! Thank goodness I had plenty of extra fabric on hand for a skirt that would be similar to Miss E's. That way they could be cute matchy twirly girls together on ISU campus for VEISHEA!!
Her skirt was a little simplified. I used long strips instead of the patchwork squares! Not that I can complain about the winter we had. We had it much better than my friends and family in Iowa. So...as I a think forward to summer I get hungry for fresh produce that I walk out into my back yard to harvest!

My wonderful hubby recognizes my need to "grow stuff" and let me dig some new beds in our yard, inside our fence and out of reach of the neighborhood deer.

Mr. G was very excited about helping me plant the "garden". He helped me choose seeds and is a master waterer. With his help, I planted lettuce (2 types), radishes, spinach, carrots, broccoli and cabbage.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi-2YyyMh2XZc2XtyzWoNcL_YZ5lRI6bc1gJc0lv5a57WaOomS1SETz8OZLGR6zOozH92n7NzC8LIlM2GJ59CNLfMWmwZqnfbX40L6HWny_lDRH4fAbSudrPDg5A4hI4eewoJVnBD9DlC4/s320/DSC00672.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5462306796269200402" />

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi3BXNPAi9ym3OtSuBqp9XkpC3OhqF0gDxjUBD2yxSD5P6SzE3ZvJB3Zi77kdivWUzZSSdV6ilv8b0aGo3ZZ25AJAA2k0UvDODZ32_VCXdWOahcGCUksQl_wJJqge29kv6GMtuChKdcQHs/s320/DSC00670.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5462306784470198850" />

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjCJyUWLI64V0RN_Hcxvd7DqIwdOzlorCceNMQObb5i7_X9gzQtcAigHT8p1cNYJEaLwj7Ttom0pjOmUDM6liheye62s3Ki_DxvcP7KaQxdBsy5v1XwPmC157mvYD3lTXVT5ckbcWniMnc/s320/DSC00669.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5462306777144645410" />

After Sandy tromped through the garden making huge pawprints on top of the spinach, I put up a rope fence to keep her out.
Hopefully if my efforts prove to produce great results.. these beds will become "raised" beds next year.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhGcrOW_CfBMqwtGjkUzCIGr3DW2BWzk3cGtMZ0OdvxLgQ4oA9Uz3giDEDw4OQFhEoxNZbRhpVsb99Ip2e62jQ-cwEXXN6yjR8GxJEBv_S_I13VjItnuMvc372KZL2p1JAODXsjYbaTcRU/s320/DSC00673.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5462306804037862354" />Unknownnoreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3180802525576045944.post-2977809576543951812010-03-25T10:14:00.001-05:002010-03-25T10:23:24.835-05:00While the kids are away.. the Mommy will play!<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 184px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi1NCfcp2y58cSF3g9poBcjOgWUANl4FJjiiaPRrzIofmReE70T64JzFUadc59_c-nl2BB6GDgdlRJkVszcNneOx7MGM_FFMBx4siw2kTmdxqFSczsGuCpVKToCB6aVsaPK38ktMooXrog/s320/Twirly+Skirt+011%5B1%5D.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5452590201572328610" />

A good friend of mine has wanted a sewing lesson for quite some time now. Two of her three kiddos are spending time with their Grandma this week, thus we found a chunk of time for that overdue sewing lesson! She has a daughter the same age as Miss E. They are great friends. So what does she need??? A TWIRLY SKIRT!!

This was a great first project for my friend. She got A LOT of practice sewing and making gathers. I know what you are thinking ... gathers.....her first time out.. that is a little ambitious! But she did a great job and we finished it in one day!

I can't wait to see her daughter twirling away in this adorable skirt! I'm sure this is just the beginning of her sewing adventures.

Next project: embellishing a t-shirt to match the twirly skirt.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3180802525576045944.post-48358736401230279122010-03-22T19:39:00.000-05:002010-03-22T20:19:07.921-05:00Dinner at 6: Fish TacosSince I started this blog, I began reading more blogs. It is amazing what is out there in cyberspace! I wonder how many blogs there are on the web. The answer would probably astound me. Oh well, I am very inspired by the ones I currently read and that is great fun!

I haven't talked about cooking yet. I really enjoy cooking for my family and anyone else who shows up at our home. A great friend of mine, whose husband is a farmer, came to visit last weekend. It seemed like we talked about food a lot while they were here. We also had a wonderful dinner at a restaurant in White Bear Lake called Manitou Station. We all had dishes that we wouldn't normally prepare at home. It was wonderful! I tried scallops in brown butter and sage. VERY GOOD! Our friend had halibut (which happened to be "in season") with a carrot coulis. I didn't know what that was (coulis), but it is basically a puree. The word sounds like "coolee". So if you see that on a menu, don't be afraid. It is great!

So here at home, I have been cooking some of our favorites lately. One of those being fish tacos. Yes.. we are Midwesterners... but we love fish tacos!!

Rachel Ray's Fish Tacos

This is a recipe that used as a reference when I began making fish tacos. I do my own variation now, as I know how the kids like them. Fish tacos are pretty basic. Here is what you need:

Tortillas
Mild white fish (halibut, cod, tilapia, etc)
Coleslaw mix (or a whole cabbage if you like to make your own slaw. The purple variety makes for a very pretty slaw!!)
Avocado
Sour cream
Lemon or lemon juice
Shredded cheese (I typically use a med. cheddar, but you can mix it up with whatever your prefer)

Heat the tortillas in the skillet OR you can wrap several in foil and warm in the oven. Smear onto the warmed tortilla the "magic green sauce" as my kids call it, (blended avocado, sour cream, lemon juice and salt and pepper to taste).

Add the fish (prepared how you like: broiled, grilled, pan fried) You can season the fish to your liking. Simply with salt, pepper and lemon juice or kick it up a notch with other seasonings. Another note about fish: I struggle at times finding good fresh fish. Fresh fish should never smell... well... fishy!! I tend to have the best luck buying vacuum sealed frozen fish.

Add the cheese and slaw. DONE!! I also serve Spanish rice with this dish, because the hubby and I like it!

I'm sure Rachel's recipe is fancier than mine with more veggies, seasonings etc. When looking for recipes, you will find that some fish is breaded and fried. Also some are called "Baja fish tacos". This is a recipe that you can truly make your own way and should have a great result.

I tried taking some of my own photos when preparing my tacos, but my photography skills are a little lacking at this point. Ah well... I will learn as I go.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3180802525576045944.post-52073780861231391122010-03-21T21:27:00.001-05:002011-01-19T10:05:37.059-06:00Twirly SkirtI bought a pattern last fall for a patchwork twirly skirt. It is really a cute pattern by Pink Fig. I collected some cute fabrics from JoAnn fabrics and the great quilt shop downtown here in Hudson called St. Croix County Dry Goods. They have really FUN fabrics.

After making Miss E's Easter dress I decided I was ready to tackle this skirt.
Actually, it is pretty simple. It just takes more time because you have to "finish" all the seams with a serger-like or zigzag stitch, which takes a bit longer.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 249px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh3q9e8Cfsed5neW_xnS0aZ20eNOIGSv3fuNgAeG6BgBgPWZx1fcN6Nag9V78rh2ii6CQqUPAt5f3zQ7YgggsQmFjOU7jL15Fx7qkQYirBNA_g7zXS9NJP7yZXd6ZtEmV1UCJLjNzrWRBw/s320/tskirt1.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5451281570548249698" />

In this photo, I have the top waist piece and the 1st row of patchwork.
This project does require gathers. My Mom and Mother-in-Law have helped me with gathering projects before and have given me great tips. The manual for my sewing machine also has information on gathering.

This skirt does not contain any type of "pattern" pieces. Is is written more like a quilt pattern, telling you the size of pieces to cut and not making you use a pattern or a template.

I must say as I read the pattern I was thinking.... "Golly this little skirt has ALOT of fabric in it!" The bottom striped piece is 3, 39" x 6" strips sewn together. But it makes for quite a twirly skirt and Miss E LOVES it. I'm sure I'll be making many more. She enjoyed choosing and laying out the blocks in an order that she liked.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 304px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgl7SHBhY-I4J7XZtrJ20UwtfUwd6MUZ2rN7Oy6cpTkhzlM6r_uADCkG6sHSSiqBROKeepoay_92XXdEguY9X6E7ByB0rlIv6hKrsg8bYKpTXfiVOcXuYSeQU6BVRsQAi_-zhHcj5cAFRA/s320/tskirt.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5451281573750699426" />Unknownnoreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3180802525576045944.post-90203648697195488712010-03-15T10:30:00.001-05:002011-01-19T10:05:55.834-06:00Easter DressAs I was shopping for Miss E's Easter dress, I was disappointed with the selection. I am not one to buy a foofy Easter dress that is impractical and rarely worn again. Of course the thought popped into my head..."hmmmm.. I guess I could make her dress." Which lead me straight to JoAnn fabrics to see if I could find a pattern that, A) I thought would look cute on her and B) that I could complete without pulling my hair out.

This is the pattern I found.

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 150px; height: 200px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjCgf8s50FKVOboRTsW0qgZhSwFYLgpxTHjIqp13gI0tbPwN6HpQcwewfXCKRSwhkBcZMqhnPYP6nYt3Gdx4xHrZSqBgILj0A_8yt-C8I8QZ4HyYFp-VQQ2-70E8l5aDaGmk1oktsZR3u8/s200/pattern2.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5448884994914112722" />

During this project, I relearned many things about following a pattern that I had forgotten.

1) Read the pattern CAREFULLY!! Closely examine how you should lay the fabrics and pattern pieces on the fabric BEFORE cutting. I didn't do this... but thankfully remembered before I got too far down the road. If you don't lay out fabrics correctly and pattern pieces right side down or right side up, you will be short of fabric OR your pieces will NOT FIT!!

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 166px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj4D_ZL0h1N7D7Pluj8vPW-QfVw1sABPaxZG8KtDhh6mlu0Teh1EOA3fC0vj_GVCrRuVEwXEN6WVr2dxc1UWOZpToxEsPVTSq5zg5_U_FHQJJ3BHgRIX_nYb79-vLIDePV1iCKexJEytPI/s200/pattern.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5448885003807944962" />

2) Making clothing is an exercise in PATIENCE!! Read directions very carefully and be willing to laugh at yourself while tearing out seams! I kept trying to rush through it and at one point sewing the lining instead of the bodice etc. etc. I ended up with the zipper in backwards. HA HA!! At least I can laugh about it now.

3) When a pattern says to use a 5/8" seam, DO IT!! Or else your garment will not fit correctly. Sewing seams when making clothing is so much different than making quilts. With some practice I am getting the hang of it. I also use the serger stitch on my sewing machine quite a bit.

Making the Dress:

I sewed the bodice first. I have done this before, so it wasn't too bad.

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 126px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiMEP4HKWWBTIqjZpzJD7B4S_1Ow24bbPkWG7Ky6xs_lIICbZvCf4P355YuVye2XPAQSfcAeICC6GDxGXDuyHoXStXQapHFt_nAUtjF5WF8nMcE3SX-oMlsHdkfyJN8aL_G3Fa8QVnqC3M/s200/bodice.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5448885005729186498" />

As it was time to make the skirt of the dress,I learned a new term, stay.. This is what you sew tiers to... a stay. I was confused at first, but it made sense after I read the directions more carefully.

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhadBXhIuTI8dV2OZ7q7Pc3Ft4Nsz3Wpoaw7Dyyky4ZgVpR8CQVCd2o9f1gTwH8z5rgIKSqGBSV54-JsR_YplpSMMpMZKpERa4VMNTKC-OvdcFaeViIP7F0eu4z1RyJdF9ZNNRswjyjNz0/s200/tier1.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5448885018227690418" />

This dress has 3 tiers and really is a cute pattern. Well, Mr. G's project for me a week or so ago was a Chinook Helicopter made from K'nex. Of course it is the final and most difficult project in the book. I thought, "I am a Mommy, I can do this!!" And thus the task began.

Mr. G helped me quite a bit, finding parts and encouraging me to finish. He was having fun creating space ships of his own. By the time we were done.. there were not many pieces left in the box!

This project even has a motor in it so that the blades can move.
